In far northern Wisconsin barely three miles from Chequamegon Bay, Lake Superior, south of Ashland, WI, ABC Raceway is one of the most unique operations in short track racing. More than 40 years ago, local businessman Frank Brevak built the 3/8-mile, banked, clay track that would become ABC Raceway. Bob Brevak, Frank's son, the 1990 ARCA champion, and NASCAR truck series driver/owner, began his racing career there. Since 1969, the non-profit Ashland-Bayfield County Racing Association has operated the track and promoted the races, building ABC into a premier Midwestern track. The drivers' group owns the state-of-the-art speedway's land, improvements and equipment and with all-volunteer help pays one of the best purses in the region. The spartan, but well-kept facility has more than 200 campsites, a paved councourse, modern food services facilities, and comfortable seating. The track uses the AMB Transponder Scoring System, has one of the best PA-systems we've heard, and an in-ground track watering system, quite remarkable for an entrant-run facility. The track is well thought of in the community, more or less the racing equivalent of a youth soccer league. ABC races six classes, including four WISSOTA-sanctioned classes, headlining with WISSOTA Modifieds. The Association's marquee event is the Red Clay Classic, held each fall in late September.
